Electric Six is the most exciting band to come tumbling out of Detroit since Kiss. Sporting grimy leisure suits and hilarious stage names (the guitarists are known only as Surge Joebot and the Rock and Roll Indian), the ragtag group comes up with a deliriously catchy disco trash sound on its smart, hyperactive debut. Studio 54 horns mingle anxiously with AC/DC-influenced garage riffs, while frontman Dick Valentine rants maniacally over jerky, suggestive punk-funk songs like “Gay Bar” and “I’m the Bomb.” Plus, rumor suggests that single “Danger! High Voltage” features the White Stripes’ Jack White on backing vocals and, less plausibly, Bill Clinton on saxophone. How cool is that? Very. –Aidin Vaziri
Product Description
Detroit’s Electric Six splice punk, new wave, disco, and arena rock into a total entertainment solution for the new breed of rock n’ roller. “This single is…pure driving disco-rock, complete with a new wave saxophone solo and ridiculous lyrics. Easily one of the best rock songs of the past year”–NY Times. “Hold on, have the White Stripes gone Studio 54?”–X-Ray.
Review
Its official: Detroit is killing it right now. Eminem rules the rap world while The White Stripes have made rock cool again. From Adult.s electro-punk to Moodymanns house abstractions, the Motor City is ruling the sonic universe with muscle, style and lots of attitude. The time has come to add the Electric Six to that lofty list. Like their contemporaries, Electric Six make their mark by sounding like no one but themselves. Its a raucous rave-up of arena rock riffs over funky disco beats, the kind of freaky dance-rock jams that belong on the jukebox in every gay biker bar in America. And while the buzzsaw bombast keeps the mullets flying, vocalist Dick Valentine is firing off punch lines (often in a mocking fake British accent) like Jack Black on a boogie fever bender. In short, this is on some seriously other shit. Its like a coke-addled disco superstar fronting KISS on the Hotter Than Hell tour. Im not sure else how to explain songs like “Naked Pictures” (of your mother, according to Valentine) or the incendiary dance-floor fizz of “Danger! High Voltage,” which warns theres “a fire in the disco/a fire in the Taco Bell!” and features White Stripe Jack White on vocals. Granted, this metal-edged madness is not for everyone, especially if youre not getting the joke. But for those that like it greasy, sleazy and wearing pants that are way too tight, this nuclear war on wax will take you there and probably offer you a hummer and a bump when you arrive.
