Features:
Format: CD-ROM
Details: The Interpretype, or ITY, was originally made for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and speech and did not use sign language. It is a way to communicate without using any speech. Instead, those who wish to communicate just type back and forth to one another. The Interpretype is essentially a keyboard with a small screen and can be connected either to another Interpretype or an actual laptop that has the Interpretype software. This device has many features that make it user friendly. First of all, the screen is relatively small which allows the users to maintain eye-contact during their communication. It is also quite small but has a full sized key board which allows for quick and efficient typing. It is very simple to hook the ITY up to any standard laptop which allows users to both print and save conversations if needed. Finally, because the ITY has minimal equipment, it can be placed almost anywhere for convenient communication. The ITY would be the perfect tool for students who are deaf or have hearing impairments. It would also help students who have speech impairments. The Interpretype can easily be hooked up to any computer in the classroom; however, the proper software must be installed. Students with hearing impairments could also be hooked up to the laptops of other students during group work so that they could be sure to both contribute and to understand what the other students are saying. This device has many different services outside of the classroom. It can be used in any business situation where one party either has a hearing impairment or speaks another language. Essentially, any organization could benefit from becoming user friendly for people with hearing and speech impairments. It can also be used for security purposes so that communications are kept private between the two users.
