Product Description

Author: Guiggiani Massimo

Brand: Springer

Edition: 2nd ed. 2018

Number Of Pages: 570

Details: Product Description

This textbook covers handling and performance of both road and race cars. Mathematical models of vehicles are developed always paying attention to state the relevant assumptions and to provide explanations for each step. This innovative approach provides a deep, yet simple, analysis of the dynamics of vehicles. The reader will soon achieve a clear understanding of the subject, which will be of great help both in dealing with the challenges of designing and testing new vehicles and in tackling new research topics.
The book deals with several relevant topics in vehicle dynamics that are not discussed elsewhere and this new edition includes thoroughly revised chapters, with new developments, and many worked exercises.

Praise for the previous edition:

Great book! It has changed drastically our approach on many topics. We are now using part of its theory on a daily basis to constantly improve ride and handling performances.
— Antonino Pizzuto, Head of Chassis Development Group at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center

Astonishingly good! Everything is described in a very compelling and complete way. Some parts use a different approach than other books.

— Andrea Quintarelli, Automotive Engineer

Review

Winner of the TAA Textbook Excellence Award 2019 with the following motivation:
“The Science of Vehicle Dynamics is a masterful text written by an exceptional contributor in the field of applied mathematics. Students and professionals alike will benefit from this practical yet innovative treatment of the material, which has already impacted the industry.”

From the Author

This second edition pursues, even more than the first edition, the goal of approaching Vehicle Dynamics as a scientific subject, with neat definitions, clearly stated assumptions, sound mathematics, critical analysis of classical concepts, step-by-step developments. This may sound theoretical, but it is actually very practical. Indeed, some automotive companies have drastically changed their approach on some topics according to some (apparently) theoretical results presented in the first edition of this book. These achievements, along with the willingness to better explain some issues, have been the motivations for writing a new edition. All chapters have been thoroughly revised, with the inclusion of some new results. Several parts have been expanded, like the section on the differential mechanism. Moreover, worked-out exercises have been included to help clarify the matter, particularly for students. In several parts the book departs from commonly accepted explanations. Somehow, the more you know (classical) vehicle dynamics, the more you will be surprised.
